My interest in photography started one day when I found myself immersed in the beautiful serenity and seductive promises of freedom offered to my imagination when I lost myself in a simple photograph. Yes, this image was aptly named Windows Bliss, the default background for Window XP. I thought "I want to capture the essence of this beautiful scene, to share something amazing with everyone else, so they can enjoy it too." From this, an interest in nature photography developed. My interests diversified and I explored the beauty in 'ugliness' and neglect - of urban decay and the perceived disharmony between mankind and nature. Quickly, it came to my attention that photography was a great tool for personal education and communication; a silent storyteller of infinite dimensions in self realisation.

Photography isn't just about capturing something beautiful in a timeless snapshot in a moment that steals your attention to the beauty we often do not seem to have time for. It's a tool for realising the universe. It's a window left slightly ajar which offers you a second and first sight to the world constructed anew. An opportunity for a communion with the universe, with your maker, who or whatever he may be. It is sort of akin to holding a phone in your hand - taking it apart, doing it no damage, examining the compartments, learning how they work and reconstructing it. This for me is the beauty of life. The components are already there and always will be here, they will change form, they will elude at times - but the playful winds dance around you beckoning you to live, to love. As life is a gift, a very beautiful gift we must cherish and celebrate, in all its fullnes; if we so dare, we are free.

I suppose it would be professional of me to say that my growth has been very linear and I have known throughout my life what I have wanted to do. That would be, however, naive, flawed and incorrect. A few years ago I did not know that I would develop a great keenness for filmmaking, I could not have comprehended the people I have met and the new desires I have. This work is a platform for me to actualise new dreams. I would like to say that my photographic work is not forced and is a reflection of how I feel at the time. It is fantastic to hear different stories and opinions about photographs. It gives me new ideas and trains me to see the world through more honest and humble eyes.

In 2006 I was fortunate enough to study at the beautiful lush campus of The University of Kent in Canterbury. There, I took a BSc in Multimedia Technology and Design where I had the freedom to practise photography and expand my technical skills in web design, animation, programming and filmmaking. In my third year my dissertation project allowed my to combine newly developed skills, a newfound confidence and hunger to make manifest ideas pulling from many avenues into what became a short film called "Illusions of a Consumerist Dream".

Post university, my creative endeavours continue to develop and evolve, recently trying my hand at some acting in a Greek school play.

The following films and websites are a few example of notable film and multimedia projects.

Illusions of a Consumerist Dream

Illusions of a Consumerist Dream

Illusions of a Consumerist Dream is a short drama created with friend Moira Zahra for a final year university project. We combined our interests to create a film that explored our ideas on the personal and social aspects of consumerism in the world today. We focused on making a film that was aesthetically rich with surreal, sensual and above all, visually intriguing imagery.

You can watch the film, a short extras clip, follow the project from concept to final product and more on a website we made for the project: www.consumeristdream.com

Exploring Paganism (Through the Pagan Society of Kent)

Exploring Paganism (Through the Pagan Society of Kent)

This was a documentary group work project where I assumed the role of team Director and Producer. Through this documentary we discovered what Paganism meant and how it was expressed in a modern context through the Pagan society of Kent, Canterbury. We followed the society over the course of a few months filming Pagan celebrations. A vox pop was also carried out to see how aware campus students were of what Paganism was. Additionally, we interviewed a priest from a nearby parish in Seasalter to find out a Christian perspective on Paganism.

A copy of the documentary is available upon request.

Voices

Voices

Voices is a Flash website portfolio of an artist's work as part of a Digital Art module. I decided to do a project of my own work and explore photography genres I had not previously worked with, namely: street art, graffiti and urban photography.

Through the context of graffiti, hearing people's stories and reading various books, I learnt about the voices of people who chose to express themselves for a multitude of reasons and through various media. It was a highly educational experience, where I photographed many places around England, Greece, Cyprus and Malta.

Looking back, I enjoy how my attitudes and interpretations have evolved and shifted towards the work of this portfolio. I think this is a joy of photography and art: the work evolves and takes new meanings as you witness yourself learning and growing as an individual.
